Kids are our present and kids are our future. We need to nurture them to gift them a bright life. This post may sound ridiculous at first. Why should we encourage a pre-schooler for science? Why cannot we let them decide what they like? Definitely and absolutely it will be up-to them to decide. By science I didn’t mean calculus or quantum physics. By Science I meant, teaching them thinking scientifically.
- Reasoning
The first step towards a scientific mind is to be able to do reasoning. Teaching them to ask “Why” and “How” question.
Excercise 1: Taste Game
Give your kid pinch of Sugar (For such younger kids, I would recommend using some organic cane sugar something like this I used always). Ask what is the taste. your kid will say , Sweet.
Give your kid a drop of lemon and ask what is the taste.
Now, Give a sweet candy to taste( I always used used sugar-free organic candies Koochikoo Sugar Free Organic Lollipop Canister, 20 Count ( Pack – 1 )). This will be the happiest part. Now ask the taste. Your kid will say Sweet. Now ask the question, why do you think the Candy is sweet? What is in it? You will be amazed when your kid will answer “because there are sugar in it.”
Now give your kid a sour candy(Koochikoo Sugar Free Organic Lollipop Canister, 20 Count ( Pack – 1 )) and ask what is the taste? Your kid now will say “Sour” and in most cases he/she will say “because it has lemon in it”.
If you get the response from your kid as mentioned in above game, then your kid is able to do reasoning pretty well. How? Because your kid can now seek answer to “How” question and can find reason for those questions.
2. Observation
The next step for the preparation is Observation quality. That means observe things and then be able to distinguish two separate items with the features observed.
Excercise 2: Animal Game
Get a big Animal book with lots of pictures of different types of animals. I personally preferred National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Animals (National Geographic Little Kids First Big Books)
Go over few animals and tell some funny facts about them.
Show the picture of Bengal Tiger. Point out to the stripes. Point out to Sharp teeth.
Show the picture of Gorilla. Point out to their hairy black body. point out to their face.
Show the picture of some birds. point out their wings. Tell wings are there to help fly.
Now, close that book. Give your kid a sheet of Animal stickers First 100 Animals Sticker Book: Over 500 Stickers. Ask your kid to pick sticker of a bird, of Gorilla , and of tiger.
If your kid can pick , he/she is good at observation. If your kid cannot do help your kid, give hint.
3. Experiment
Let your kid do experiment their reasoning and observation skills. This will help them grow interest in 2 things
a. Confirming their reasoning and belief.
b. Thinking and Trying out things out of the box
Excercise 3: Experiment
Give your kid a cup of water. Now ask him, “If I give you a spoon of sugar to mix in the water. What do you think the taste of the whole water be?” Let your Kid guess.
If your kid says, it will be sweet, tell him/her to try and see. And when it will really be sweet, capture that moment of your kids face in your camera 🙂
If your Kid cannot guess it, then also tell your kid, “Ok, lets try it out and see”. Then after few days repeat the same.
If your Kid is of age 2-3 , these above 3 exercises are good enough to have them prepared for our next stage.
See, you really need only a little time of yours regularly to spend with your kids. All the items that you need are really easily you can get from anywhere and if you just want from Amazon below are the links again.
In my next post I will continue about preparing them further in Age group 4 -5 .
